Safety NetAI ConnectionsSecure DeleteVaultPrivacySecurity

Safety Net keeps a private history of the folders you choose, where apps and AI agents can't delete it, and puts your files back when something deletes or rewrites them. AI apps can now find duplicates and ask to run a scheduled job, and their connection keys are kept out of their settings files.

What's New

  • Safety Net (Mac). A new page, Protect › Safety Net, keeps a private history of the folders you choose. If an app, a script or an AI agent deletes or rewrites your files, you can put them back. The history is kept by VaultSort's helper where programs running as you, including AI agents, can't delete or change it. When many files in a protected folder are deleted or changed at once, VaultSort offers to restore the folder as it was just before. Leave As Is keeps things as they are, and Not Now asks again later. Restore… lists each folder's restore points: before a burst of changes, before an AI connection's first change, and before a restore. Restoring puts the whole folder back in place, keeps files created since, and can itself be undone. Turning Safety Net off for a folder deletes its history, and macOS asks for your password first. History is kept for 30 days. The free version protects one folder and shows alerts. Premium protects as many folders as you like. Restoring is always free. Safety Net needs VaultSort's helper, which the page offers to install. It works on folders on your Mac's internal disk. It isn't a backup: the history is on the same disk, so it doesn't survive a disk failure, and a file created and deleted within a few seconds may be missed. Safety Net isn't available on Windows yet.
  • AI apps and Safety Net. Before a connected AI app's first change in a protected folder, VaultSort makes a restore point. An AI app can list restore points, make one before work it's about to do (kept for 3 days), and ask you to restore a folder to a point made for an AI connection. Restoring is always your decision, in VaultSort.
  • AI apps can find duplicates. A connected AI app can find files with identical contents in the folders you gave it. It compares only files in folders where Contents is on. Files in folders it may only list are never compared, not even with each other, because a match would tell it what a file contains. It changes nothing: removing copies goes through a plan that moves them to the Trash, which you can undo, and the usual approval and Premium rules apply. Finding duplicates is free.
  • AI apps can ask to run a scheduled job now. VaultSort asks you every time, and shows where the job will put files. Only jobs whose folders are all ones you gave the AI app, that look only at files directly inside their folders, and that only move and rename files can be run this way, so every run can be undone. Safety Net makes a restore point first when the folder is protected. The run shows as asked by in Scheduled Jobs history and Recent Activity. This needs Premium.
  • Connection keys stay out of AI apps' settings files. An AI app's settings used to hold its connection key, where an AI agent could read it. Settings now name only the connection, and the key is kept in your Mac's Keychain. Connections set up in Claude Desktop and Cursor are moved over automatically, with a backup of each settings file. For Claude Code, the AI Connections page shows the command to run again. Rotate Key gives a connection a new key and stops the old one working. (Once you've used this version, earlier versions of VaultSort can't read your AI connections. If you go back to an earlier version, set them up again.)

Improvements

  • Secure Delete tells you about Safety Net's history. Securely deleting files in a protected folder doesn't yet erase their earlier versions from Safety Net's history. So when anything you securely delete, encrypt with "delete original", or move to the Vault is in or holds a protected folder, VaultSort now says so first. You can cancel, or go ahead knowing the earlier versions stay in the history for at least 30 days. Turning Safety Net off for the folder deletes its history.
  • Clearer privacy wording. The Home page now says that nothing in your files is sent anywhere unless you turn on a cloud AI provider or connect an AI app. The AI settings no longer say that Ollama always keeps everything on your computer: that's true for a model downloaded to this computer, not for Ollama's cloud models. The privacy policy now names the two optional features that send information out.

Bug Fixes

  • Ollama on another computer is recognised. Some addresses that only look local, such as 127.0.0.1.nip.io, were treated as this computer. The Ollama settings didn't show their warning about another computer, and redaction suggestions could send a document's text there. Now only addresses that really are this computer count as local.
  • AI connection activity survives "Start AI connections over". Changes an AI app made after you started AI connections over disappeared from Recent Activity the next time VaultSort started, and couldn't be undone. They now stay.
  • Removing an AI connection while it's working. If you removed a connection while it still had requests waiting, its next change could make a second restore point. Each connection's session now ends only after its last request.
  • Secure Delete reports files it can't fully erase. When VaultSort's helper securely deletes a file that has another name elsewhere on the disk (a hard link), overwriting it would also overwrite the other name's data. It now removes this name only and reports the file as not securely erased, instead of as done.
  • Secure Delete no longer hangs on special files. A named pipe or socket in a folder could make Secure Delete wait forever. Such entries are now removed without being opened.

Security

  • VaultSort can't be made to run other programs' code. VaultSort's Mac app and its AI connection relay are now signed so that another program on your computer can't load its own code into them.
