Why the drive you formatted is still readable

A quick format writes an index, not the disk

It replaces the table that says where files are. The files themselves are untouched, and free recovery software walks the raw sectors to rebuild them. This is why a formatted drive can be read back in minutes by someone with no particular expertise.

A full format is better, slower, and not always enough

Modern Windows does write zeros during a full format, which genuinely destroys data on a hard disk. On flash it is a different story, and the difference is not visible from the dialog box you clicked.

SSDs keep capacity your operating system cannot address

Flash controllers spread writes across the device and hold spare blocks in reserve. Data can survive in cells no filesystem-level write will ever reach, which is why overwriting an SSD thirty-five times is mostly thirty-five times the wear.

The drive Windows is running from cannot be erased at all

Not by VaultSort and not by anything else — the operating system needs the disk it is executing from. That is a fact about the hardware rather than a missing feature, and a tool claiming otherwise is describing something else.

What VaultSort does about it

Whole-disk erase, measured on real hardware

A single pass over a 62 GB USB drive took 1 hour 10 minutes. Three passes took 3 hours 29 minutes and wrote 173 GiB. Those are stopwatch numbers from a real device, not a throughput calculation.

Progress in bytes actually written

The bar tracks the write, so the estimate you see ten minutes in is the estimate that holds. Knowing an erase is a three-hour job is information you want before starting rather than after.

TRIM, which works with the hardware instead of against it

Tells an SSD controller which blocks are free so it can erase them properly — the right instrument on flash, where overwriting is the wrong one. Windows-only: macOS exposes no per-volume equivalent an application can invoke.

Free-space shredding, without touching your files

Overwrites unallocated space so files deleted long before VaultSort was installed cannot be recovered from what was left behind. Run to completion on a 62 GB volume. This is the one to use when the drive is staying and only its history should go.

Elevation for the operation, not for the application

Erasing a disk requires administrator rights. VaultSort asks at the point of the operation through a separate elevated worker, rather than running the whole application as administrator for the sake of one button.

Refusals rather than half-measures

When a device or a partition layout cannot be erased safely, VaultSort says so before the confirmation rather than reporting a success it did not achieve. A tool that overstates what it did is worse than no tool, because you stop checking.

What it does not do yet

  • Erasing a single volume on a multi-partition removable drive is refused up front. It cannot be done safely on that layout, so the whole-disk alternative is offered instead.
  • The system drive cannot be erased from inside Windows. Use Windows’ own Reset with the data-cleaning option, or take the drive out and erase it from another machine.
  • TRIM is refused on a RAW or unformatted volume, because there is no filesystem to report free blocks from. Format it first, or erase the whole disk.
  • Self-encrypting drives support a cryptographic erase through their own firmware that is faster than any overwrite. VaultSort does not issue those commands; use the manufacturer’s utility where the drive supports it.

Questions people ask

How many passes do I actually need?

One, on any drive manufactured this century. The multi-pass advice everyone repeats traces to a 1996 paper about encoding schemes that no longer exist, and its author has since said it no longer applies. Use three or more when a standard you are held to requires it — not out of habit, and knowing it triples the time.

How long will erasing my drive take?

Roughly the time it takes to write the whole device once, per pass, at the drive’s sustained write speed. The measured example above is 62 GB in about seventy minutes over USB. A 2 TB external disk is an overnight job, and a 4 TB one is longer than a working day.

Is erasing an SSD different from erasing a hard disk?

Yes, and it matters. Overwriting is the correct instrument on a hard disk and a blunt one on flash, where the controller decides which physical cells a write lands on. On an SSD, prefer TRIM, or a whole-disk erase followed by TRIM, over piling on passes.

What if the drive was encrypted with BitLocker?

Then destroying the key destroys the data, which is far quicker than overwriting it. VaultSort reports BitLocker status per volume, so you can see what you are dealing with before deciding whether a full erase is worth the hours.
